Riding over and past the wave of Rihanna’s ANTI release that went anti-planned (sorry, there are just too many puns to make), Zayn Malik has swept in and released his first solo track since dramatically parting ways with One Direction.

At first, I thought the vocals for ‘Pillowtalk’ were Nick Jonas or Troye Sivan. I was listening to Soundcloud and it took a while for me to believe it was Zayn. But I’m sure 1D fans will have recognised his voice straight away. I’m calling it ‘hot pop’, mixed with just the right amount of RnB to make it sexy, smooth and catchy. And yes he swears, as he said he would, and yes all teen Mum’s will be livid with his use of the F word… But he had to do that to show he’s grown up right? And the teeny boppers will give him so much credit for that. My niece included.

The video feels like a fashion film and reminded me of The Weeknd’s visuals from the Apple Music Festival last year – flowers and art were all infused with live vivid tones and mixed with the female form – if you were there or watched the stream you’ll know what I mean. A further nod to The Weeknd is Zayn’s leading lady, the other Hadid – his girlfriend Gigi.

It’s not what we expected… I’m not sure what we expected. But it’s enough to keep the 1D fans screaming and dreaming and maybe enough to open up a new fanbase? But either way we love the track. It’s perfect pop with a sultry edge and a very naughty video – and we’re already singing it on repeat. “It’s our paradise, and it’s our war zone.”
